Bite Balancing in Durham, NC

Bite balancing, also called equilibration, is the careful adjustment of how your teeth meet so they work together instead of against each other. When your bite is off, it can lead to worn teeth, sore muscles, jaw strain, and dental work that keeps failing. At Fleming Dental in Durham, this functional work is the heart of what Dr. Fleming does.

HOW IT WORKS

What to expect at your visit.

1

Evaluation

We study how your teeth meet, using mounted models and a careful exam, to find where the contacts are off.

2

Diagnosis

We pinpoint the spots where your bite is out of harmony with your muscles and jaw joints.

3

Adjustment

Dr. Fleming makes small, precise changes to how your teeth contact, a little at a time.

4

Refinement

We check your comfort and function and fine-tune until your bite works smoothly and feels natural.

What bite balancing is

Bite balancing, or equilibration, is the precise reshaping of the contacts between your upper and lower teeth so they meet evenly. Even tiny high spots can throw off the whole system, forcing your muscles and jaw joints to compensate. By adjusting those contacts, Dr. Fleming helps your bite work in harmony, which protects your teeth and eases the strain.

Signs your bite may be off

An unbalanced bite can be quiet or obvious. Watch for teeth that feel like they hit first or unevenly, jaw soreness or tension, headaches, worn or chipped teeth, sensitivity, or restorations that keep breaking. If any of these sound familiar, your bite is worth a closer look.

Why it is the foundation of lasting dentistry

Many dental problems are treated as isolated events. Dr. Fleming sees them as parts of a system. When the bite is right, fillings and crowns last longer, teeth wear less, and the whole mouth is more comfortable. That is why he starts here, and why bite balancing sits at the center of the practice.

Advanced, bite-focused dentistry is what drew Dr. Alex Fleming to this work, and it is where he has invested the most training, including advanced study through the Pankey Institute. Bite balancing is not an add-on for him. It is the lens he brings to everything.

He takes the time to understand how your whole system fits together, then makes careful, deliberate adjustments so your bite is comfortable, functional, and stable for the long run.
